KIP B or KIP W?
A KIP B has its timer and thermostat dials on the heater and needs nothing else to run. A KIP W runs from a separate Harvia control, bought apart, which comes with its own power unit and temperature sensor. Harvia's manual gives the KIP B thermostat dial no temperature scale. The Xenio and Fenix controls set the room from 104 to 194 °F, and the Fenix models add WiFi.
Each control's rating decides which KIP W it runs. The Xenio CX30 and Fenix FX30 carry up to 7 kW at 240V on one supply group and 10.5 kW at 208V. The Fenix FX45 carries up to 10.8 kW at 240V and 15 kW at 208V.
| Control | Runs these KIP W | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Harvia Xenio CX30 | KIP45W and KIP60W, 240V or 208V | $851 |
| Harvia Fenix FX30 WiFi | KIP45W and KIP60W, 240V or 208V | $1,064 |
| Harvia Fenix FX45 WiFi | Every KIP W, the KIP80W included | $1,413 |
A KIP45W with a Xenio CX30 comes to $1,656 before stones, against $975 for a KIP45B. Every Harvia control we carry is on the sauna heater controls page.
How many stones does a KIP hold, and how do you load them?
Every KIP takes 44 lb, or 20 kg, of stones 5 to 10 cm across, about 2 to 4 in. One 20 kg box of Harvia stones, 5 to 10 cm at $52 covers it. The manual calls for peridotite, olivine diabase, olivine or vulcanite, and the other boxes are on the sauna heater stones page. The KIP B manual loads them in this order.
- Rinse the stone dust off.
- Take off the stone guard.
- Put the stones in one by one, without dropping them.
- Flat stones go first, at the bottom and around and between the elements.
- Larger stones go last, on top of the elements.
- Do not stack them so high that the guard will not fit.
- Do not bend the elements, and leave no element showing between or below the stones.
- Put the stone guard back.
What wiring does a KIP need?
Both KIP manuals call for a standard two pole breaker with no GFCI, and neither gives a breaker size. Only a qualified electrician may do electrical work on the heater. The wire sizes are Harvia's minimum for copper rated 90 °C, and your electrician sizes the circuit. A KIP W is fed through its control, so the table gives the control's maximum breaker. Every KIP we stock is UL listed, and both manuals say it complies with UL 875.

How do you reset a Harvia KIP?
When the KIP's overheat protector trips, the manuals reset it this way.
- Switch the heater off at the breaker.
- Find out why the overheat protector tripped before you reset it.
- Let the heater cool.
- Check that the temperature sensor is fitted correctly and that the stones sit correctly.
- Press the reset button in the electric box, reached through the hole in the heater's bottom cover.
A KIP W also has an overheat reset on its control's sensor, covered in the control's manual.
KIP, Spirit or Virta?
The KIP is the shortest and shallowest of the three. The Spirit and Virta both run from a separate control and hold about 110 lb of stones against the KIP's 44 lb. The Spirit takes rounded stones and stops at 9 kW. The Virta adds a 10.5 kW model for rooms up to 635 cubic feet.
| Line | kW we stock | Room volume, cu ft | Stones | Height x width x depth, in | Control |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| KIP | 4.5, 6 or 8 | 100 to 425 | 44 lb | 23.6 x 16.1 x 11 | Dials on the KIP B, separate on the KIP W |
| Spirit | 6, 8 or 9 | 177 to 494 | About 110 lb, rounded | 29.5 x 15 x 13.1 | Separate |
| Virta | 6, 8, 9 or 10.5 | 177 to 635 | 110 lb, 154 lb at 10.5 kW | 33 x 16 x 13, 16 deep at 10.5 kW | Separate |
