What does each Harvia heater need to run?
The KIP B, the Cilindro with dials, The Wall and the Vega Compact carry a timer and thermostat on the heater, so they run with nothing else. The KIP W, Cilindro E, Spirit, Virta, Virta Combi, Virta Pro and Club run from a separate control, bought apart. The Xenio and Fenix controls set the room from 104 to 194 °F. The setups below pair each heater with a control its manual or the control's rating allows, and the electric sauna heaters page gives the amps, wire size and control limits for every model.
A setup total is the least expensive heater in the family, the control it needs and enough whole boxes of Harvia stones for its stone load, at the prices on each product page. Wood burning totals leave out the chimney and flue parts.

Electric or wood burning?
An electric Harvia runs on a 240V or 208V circuit, or 120V for the smallest Vega Compact, and its thermostat holds the room at temperature. A wood burning Harvia needs no circuit and no control, and it needs a chimney and flue. The wood stoves also reach the largest rooms here, up to 1,766 cubic feet on the Harvia 50. Compare the electric sauna heaters or the wood burning sauna heaters.
Are Harvia sauna heaters any good?
Harvia is a Finnish company. Tapani Harvia founded it as a small workshop in 1950, and its factory is in Muurame, Finland. Every KIP we carry is UL listed, and its manuals say it complies with UL 875, the safety standard for electric dry bath heaters. The Cilindro, Spirit, Virta, Virta Pro, Virta Combi, Club, The Wall and Vega Compact are ETL listed, tested to UL 875. Each electric family has a US manual giving its room range, wiring and stone load, and the electric figures on this page come from those manuals.
How long does a Harvia heater take to heat a sauna?
Harvia's manuals give these times to reach bathing temperature.
| Family | Time to bathing temperature |
|---|---|
| KIP B | 30 to 60 minutes |
| Cilindro with dials | About half an hour |
| Cilindro E, Spirit, Virta, Virta Combi, Club | About an hour |
| The Wall, Vega Compact | At least 30 minutes |
| KIP W, Virta Pro | Not published |
Harvia's energy FAQ says a heater runs at full power for about the first 30 to 40 minutes. A heater too small for the room heats longer and wears faster, per the manuals, which is why the glass and log wall allowances above matter.
Can you pour water on a Harvia heater?
Yes, on the stones only. The KIP and Spirit manuals call for a ladle of no more than 0.2 liters, about 6.8 oz, at a time. The KIP manual adds no water on a cool or switched off heater, and none while anyone is near it.
The Virta Combi also makes its own steam. The HL80SA, HL90SA and the HL110SA at 240V or 208V add a 2.1 kW steamer with a reservoir of about 1.3 gallons, or 5 liters. They fill it from a cold water line fitted with a shutoff valve and a vacuum breaker. The 240V models run from the Xenio Combi CX30C, and for the 208V HL110SA, call (602) 691-5553 about its control.
