What size electric sauna heater do you need?
Measure the room in cubic feet, length times width times height, and pick a heater whose range in the planning table below covers it. Harvia's manuals add 1.2 cubic meters for each square meter of glass, glass block, brick, concrete, tile or other uninsulated wall, about 3.9 cubic feet for each square foot, and count a log room at one and a half times its volume. A heater too small for the room heats longer and wears faster.
The KIP, Cilindro, Spirit, Virta, Club and Vega Compact lines each have their own page. Harvia's electric heaters are also together on the Harvia electric heaters page, and the EOS models on the EOS sauna heaters page.
Each heater also needs its stones, bought apart. The KIP manual puts flat stones in first, low around and between the elements, and larger stones on top, with no element left showing. The Harvia sauna heaters page gives each family's stone load.
What does a sauna heater need from your electrical panel?
Harvia's manuals have a licensed electrician hard wire the heater in sealed conduit, with no plug. The KIP manuals call for a standard two pole breaker and no GFCI. Most Harvia heaters here run on 240V single phase, and the KIP W, Cilindro E, Virta, Virta Combi, Virta Pro and Club also come in 208V three phase models. The EOS heaters run on 208V three phase or 240V.
The KIP B, the Cilindro with dials, The Wall and the Vega Compact carry a timer and thermostat on the heater. Every other heater here runs from a separate control, bought apart, such as the Harvia Xenio CX30 or the Fenix FX30 and FX45 WiFi controls on the sauna heater controls page.
Amps and wire come from each manual's supply table. Wire sizes are Harvia's minimum for copper rated 90 °C. For a heater on a separate control, the wire is the run from the control's power unit to the heater, and the control's own feed follows the control's manual. Where a manual allows two groups or circuits, the table gives that figure second. Your electrician sizes the breaker and wire for your panel.
No heater manual gives a breaker size, so a heater on a Xenio CX30, a Fenix FX30 or FX45 or the combi control takes that control's maximum breaker, 30 A on the CX30 or FX30, 45 A on the FX45, and 30 A at 240V or 45 A at 208V on the combi control. The CX30 and FX30 carry up to 7 kW on one group at 240V, so the KIP80W runs only on the FX45, and a Cilindro, Spirit or Virta over 7 kW at 240V runs on the FX45 or on a CX30 or FX30 wired in two groups. No breaker size is published for the heaters with a timer and thermostat of their own, for the Virta Pro, which feeds through two or four circuits, or for the Club, which feeds through a load center at 240V.

EOS gives the Invisio Midi's cabin size as floor area at a 6.2 ft ceiling rather than volume. Its manual marks the higher fuse as the maximum, set on site to the load. The listed price is the 6 kW.
Can you run a sauna heater on a regular outlet?
No. The smallest heater here, the Harvia Vega Compact BC19 at 1.9 kW, can run on a 120V circuit at 15.9 A, for rooms of 70.5 to 106 cubic feet with a ceiling of at least 75 in. Its manual still has it hard wired in sealed conduit and allows no plug or pigtail in the sauna room. Every other heater here needs 240V or 208V.
An electric heater does work for a sauna when it is a sauna heater built to UL 875, the safety standard for electric dry bath heaters. California's mechanical code requires sauna heaters to comply with it.
Do sauna heaters use a lot of electricity?
A heater draws its full rating only while the room heats, about the first 30 to 40 minutes in Harvia's energy FAQ. After that the thermostat cycles it at roughly half power. Harvia puts a 6 kW heater at about 4 to 5 kWh in the first hour and 3 to 4 kWh in the second. The full power rows below are a ceiling. They are our estimates at the US residential average of 18.31 cents per kWh for July 2026, from the EIA's Electric Power Monthly, and your own rate is on your electric bill.
| Heater size | Energy for one hour at full power, kWh | Cost at 18.31 cents per kWh, in cents |
|---|---|---|
| 1.9 kW | 1.9 | 35 |
| 4.5 kW | 4.5 | 82 |
| 6 kW | 6 | 110 |
| 8 kW | 8 | 146 |
| 9 kW | 9 | 165 |
| 10.5 kW | 10.5 | 192 |
| 6 kW, a two hour session per Harvia | 7 to 9 | 128 to 165 |
Harvia's manuals give heat up times from about half an hour to about an hour by model, listed by family on the Harvia sauna heaters page.
Which electric sauna heater is the most efficient?
The US Department of Energy notes that electric resistance heating converts all the electricity it uses into heat. Every heater on this page heats that way, so two heaters of the same kW use the same energy for the same hour, whatever the brand. The running cost follows the room. Insulated walls, less glass and a heater sized to the room cut the time spent at full power, and the allowances above show how much glass and log walls add.
Electric or wood burning?
Electric suits a room with a 240V or 208V circuit to spare and an owner who wants the heat on a timer or a WiFi control. Wood burning suits a room without that supply, and it needs a chimney and flue in place of a circuit. Harvia's stoves are on the wood burning sauna heaters page.
